Religious Education

At Our Lady of Lourdes, we use the Religion Curriculum P-12 to plan and implement teaching and learning experiences for our students in Religious Education. The Religion Curriculum P-12 developed by Brisbane Catholic Education, involves the teaching of four strands: Sacred Texts, Beliefs, Church and Christian Life. These strands are interrelated and are taught in an integrated way. The Religion Curriculum is taught with the same academic rigour as the Curriculum Areas specified in the Australian Curriculum and our learners are given multiple opportunities as they engage with the content to demonstrate how they have been successful in their learning.

There are two dimensions to Religion experiences in Brisbane Catholic Education schools: Religious Education and the Religious Life of the School.

The Religious Education component outlines the mandated expectations for all students with the Brisbane Catholic Education sector and has been approved by Archbishop Coleridge.  Each Year level has detailed learning experiences that address all content descriptors in short cycle unit plans that are revised each year in response to student needs.

The Vision for Religious Education challenges students to be a religious voice in the world. The Vision gives greater prominence and a renewed orientation to the critical interpretation and evaluation of culture. Through vibrant and engaging Religious Education, students become active constructors of culture rather than passive consumers. In this way, students are challenged to live the gospel of Jesus Christ in their everyday lives.

Religious Education seeks to develop the religious literacy of students considering the Catholic Christian tradition, so that they might participate critically and authentically in contemporary culture. Students become religiously literate as they develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to interpret and use language confidently in and for faith contexts and the wider society.

The curriculum area of Religious Education is taught in accordance with the Religious Education Archdiocese of Brisbane Curriculum, P-12. Religious Education at Our Lady of Lourdes seeks to develop the religious understanding of students in light of the Catholic Christian tradition, so that they might participate authentically in contemporary life.

The Religion Curriculum has four strands. Each of these strands comprises three distinct yet interrelated sub-strands:

  • Sacred Texts: Old Testament, New Testament, and Christian Spiritual Writings and Wisdom.
  • Beliefs Trinity: God, Jesus the Christ, Spirit; Human Existence; and World Religions.
  • Church: Liturgy and Sacraments, People of God, and Church History.
  • Christian Life: Moral Formation; Mission and Justice; and Prayer and Spirituality.
